BLOOD TESTS EXPLAINED (C)
CA-125
Ovarian cancer survival is directly related to its detection stage. Studies have shown that the CA-125 may forewarn of ovarian cancer. 80% of the women who have ovarian cancer have elevated levels of the serum tumor marker CA-125. This also means that less than 20% of these women do not have the marker at all. The rate of "false positives" with CA-125 is also high, which is why this test alone is inadequate for screening purposes. However, repeat testing of CA-125 is helpful for observing a trend (I.e. your own Personal Normal level), which can be useful for early detection.
CA-15-3
Used to investigate recurrence and spread of breast cancer. Elevated levels suggest spread or recurrence. Often used in conjunction with the CEA and CA-125 tests.
CA-19-9
Traditionally used to investigate recurrence and spread of pancreatic cancer. Elevated levels suggest spread or recurrence. Should be ordered in conjunction with the CEA. YFH case studies show that CA-19-9 scores recorded over time in conjunction with CEA scores over that same time period, can be used for early detection of disease. This test is included in both the Male and Female Cancer Packages. If you are concerned about cancer, you are strongly encouraged to consider these packages as the tests are discounted from their individual prices.
Calcium
Calcium is controlled in the blood by the parathyroid gland and the kidneys and is one of the most important elements in the body. Virtually all of the calcium in your body is found in bone (99%). That other 1% is very important for healthy bones and teeth, proper blood clotting, muscle function, nerve, cell, and enzyme activity.
Cancer Package (Women)
This is a very comprehensive package of cancer tests designed by YFH to save our female clients money. Includes the CEA (8 different organs), CA-125 (ovaries and peritoneal), CA-15-3 (breast), and CA-19-9 (pancreas) cancer screens. For anyone who is at high risk for cancer, people who have already been diagnosed with cancer and want to check on the progress of a diagnosed cancer, or for anyone who would like a complete set of cancer screens for benchmarking and peace of mind. This package is available in both the HealthPrint and Test Only divisions of our company and is often added to the Basic HealthPrint or Test Only Wellness panels.
Cancer Package (Men)
This is a very comprehensive package of cancer tests designed by YFH to save our male clients money. Includes the CEA (8 different organs), PSAII (prostate), and CA-19-9 (pancreas) cancer screens.
CEA (8 Organs are Screened)
CEA is a protein that normally occurs in fetal gut tissue. After birth, detectable serum levels essentially disappear. However, CEA increases in the presence of various cancers. Screens the breast, thyroid, lung, liver, pancreas, stomach, bone, and colon (actually the entire gastrointestinal system). Detection time with this test ranges from 3 to 36 months prior to the onset of disease.
It is helpful to get a benchmark score while you feel well–changes in this test can be indicative of an impending ulcer, thyroid imbalance, irritable bowel disease, benign polyps, breast cyst, liver imbalances, and multiple other early signs of disease long before an actual cancer develops. Does not screen the prostate or ovaries/peritoneum. This test is included in both the Male and Female Cancer Packages. If you are concerned about cancer, you are strongly encouraged to consider these packages as the tests are discounted from their individual prices.
Chloride
Similar to sodium, it helps to maintain the body's electrolyte balance. Almost never found out of balance alone. This element usually fluctuates with elevated or decreased levels of sodium or potassium. Important to the function of nerves, muscles, and cells. Chloride is regulated by the kidneys and adrenal glands.
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The complete blood count (CBC) is an analysis of blood cells and . The basic examination of blood includes analysis of the concentration, structure and function of the different blood cells. Three types of cells present in the blood are red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and platelets. The healthy function of these cells is essential to normal life. Specifically measures or counts the red and white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, RDW, MCH, MCHC, and MCV.
C-Reactive Protein (Heart disease)
A substance in the blood that is a marker of inflammation to the blood vessels and a strong predictor of heart disease risk. Also important in other inflammatory diseases like arthritis, lupus, and fibromyalgia.
Creatinine (Kidneys)
A measure of the kidneys' ability to excrete waste. Comparing the excretion of creatinine to urea helps assess how well your kidneys are functioning. Malnutrition, dehydration, and liver function have little influence on creatinine levels (unlike BUN).
